Yacht days, from a shared deck to the whole boat

A yacht day costs less than you think. The question is which deck.

Whether a shared sunset cruise beats chartering the boat. What four hours off Cabo really runs to. Which Bosphorus operator stops long enough to swim. Reviews of the yacht cruises and charters you can book today.

Where the fleets are

Six harbours where a yacht day is easy to book and hard to regret.

Two continents from one deck, a Baja coast full of marlin boats, a Caribbean reef half an hour offshore, volcanic water thick with whales, and a marina lit like a runway. Six places to start, and the best day afloat in each.

Mexico afloat

Two Mexican coasts, four kinds of yacht day. Pick the water first.

The Pacific side gives you rock arches, marlin boats and whales in winter. The Caribbean side gives you reef, cenote-clear water and an open bar. Both are cheap by yacht standards, and the difference is what you do once the engines stop.

Per person or per boat

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 899 travellers aboard the most-booked charter

A shared cruise sells you a seat and a schedule. A charter sells you the hull, the crew and the route, quoted for the boat rather than the head. Six of you makes the second cheaper than it looks; two of you almost never does.

The group answer

Split a hull four ways

3-4h· quoted per boat· crew included

Cabo and Puerto Vallarta quote by the hour for the whole yacht. Divided by six people it lands near a shared ticket, and nobody else is on the swim platform.

The couple answer

Buy a seat, not a boat

2-3h· per person· fixed departure

Two of you on a private charter pays for four empty seats. A shared sunset sailing off Marbella or Barcelona costs a fraction and puts you on the same water.

The occasion answer

When the boat is the event

4h+· quoted per boat· catering optional

Birthdays, proposals and anything with a cake need the saloon and the aft deck to yourselves. Dubai charters price catering and jet skis as add-ons, so ask before you board.

The good hulls

What a luxury yacht buys you that a tour boat cannot.

Shade over the whole aft deck, a saloon cold enough to hide in, a swim platform at water level and a crew who know where the current is soft. These are the boats travellers rate highest, wherever they sail.

The Bosphorus

Istanbul is the only city where a yacht crosses continents twice an hour.

Ottoman palaces on one bank, apartment blocks on the other, tankers running the middle, and a current strong enough to decide the route. Boats leave from Kabatas and Besiktas all afternoon; the ones worth booking tie up on the Asian side long enough to get off.

What a deck costs

What a day on a yacht actually costs, by band.

Every priced cruise on the site, sorted by what it asks per head. The cheap end is not the bad end: some of the best water on this list is under fifty dollars.

Under $50

Shared decks, two-hour marina runs, sunset sailings and the eco boats that go out to the whales.

$50-150

Half-day cruises with lunch cooked aboard, reef stops with gear, and the island-hopping runs.

$150 and up

Full-day charters, catered motor yachts and the boats you take because the day is the occasion.

Only from a hull

Three stretches of water you cannot see any other way.

Coastlines are everywhere. A strait between two continents, a wine river with locks, and a bay of drowned limestone are not, and none of the three has a road along it.

Two continents

The Bosphorus Strait

Seventeen miles of saltwater run between Europe and Asia, and everything Istanbul was built for sits on the banks: the Dolmabahce palace, the Ottoman summer houses at Kandilli, three bridges and a fortress that once shut the whole channel. The surface current runs south and a counter-current runs north underneath it, which is why the captains hug alternate banks on the way back.

The Douro Valley

Above Porto the river is a staircase of dams, and a yacht going upstream rides a lock chamber the height of a building to get past each one. The banks are terraced with port vines cut into schist, worked by hand because nothing with wheels can climb them. Boats run from Vila Nova de Gaia; the good ones go far enough to leave the city entirely.

Phang Nga Bay

The towers standing out of the water east of Phuket are the tops of a collapsed karst range, hollowed into caves at sea level by the tide. Some open into hongs, roofless lagoons you can only enter by canoe at the right hour. The bay is shallow and sheltered, which is why the boats out here are fast and flat rather than deep.

Book before you fly

Four yacht days that will not wait for you to land.

Most of the water on this site can be arranged the night before. These four run on fixed departures, small passenger caps and seasons that ignore your flight dates.

  1. 01Luxury Sunset Yacht Cruise on the Bosphorus – Refresh & RelaxThere is one sunset departure a day and the boats are small. In summer the Istanbul evening sailings are gone days ahead.
  2. 02Eco-Yacht Whale and Dolphin Watching and SwimmingWhale and dolphin boats carry a licensed passenger cap, and the calm morning slot is the one that sees animals.
  3. 03Dubai 3 Hour Private Luxury Yacht Charter with Jet Ski OptionA charter takes a whole hull out of the fleet, so a Saturday in season is booked out well before the weekend.
  4. 04Northern Lights Yacht TourThis one only runs in the dark half of the year, and a clear night with a free boat is a narrow window.
Before you board

Wind, shade and the small print that decides a yacht day.

Four things change a booking more than the boat does. Whether the quote is per person or per boat. Whether there is shade for the middle of the day. Whether the swim stop is a promise or a maybe, since a captain can cancel it on swell alone. And whether food is cooked aboard or handed over in a box.
